God and the Whistling Train Chapter1 section3
Matthew 8:1-4 (NKJV) When He had come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed Him. And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus said to him, “See that you tell no one; but go your way, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”
A large crowd had been following Him and saw Jesus responding to the man with leprosy. The man asked Jesus to heal him. Jesus responded willingly. Immediately he recovered.
This is a very simple story and easy to take at face value. The reality is that in a matter of seconds, which is what the writer suggests, there is incredible biological changes. Nerves that had lost their function were rejuvenated, they could feel again. No longer could he put his hand in a fire and not feel the pain and the damage that it would do. He could look after himself like a normal person and mix with people. He would be no longer ostracised.
Tissue recovered and cells changed or replaced. It is an amazing happening. What Jesus achieves in seconds, doctors, with all their knowledge, cannot achieve today. Not only that much of what happened was visible for all to see and recognise. Those that are there see it happen and it leaves such a significant impact those present remember story and pass it on. They call it a miracle. All the little things that had to happen, did. Scientific things that scientists could only wish to understand happened with incredible speed. All these things were hidden behind the term ‘miracle’. The truth about how this miracle happened was far beyond the understanding of the onlookers; and perhaps even today’s scientists. So it is simply recorded as a miracle.
We can never underestimate the creativity of God and we need to look inside the story. We need to understand two things, one was the historical accuracy of the Scriptures; which much is been written about. Second thing we need to do, is to understand what John knew when he wrote the first chapter of his book. The person doing the miracle, is the personification of the person that created in the beginning. The science of that story is also two incredible for us to understand and may be even to read. Jesus is in control of even the smallest particles known to man and can affect these.
